We have been using the Part/Part/Whole model.

Year 1 Topic letter

Spring 1- Moon zoom

Would you like to be an astronaut? You’ll need a pretty sturdy spacecraft if you do. Next half term we will be learning about different materials and thinking about which materials would be best for different purposes.

Find out the names of the planets. There’s Mercury, Neptune, Mars and… do you know any others? I’ve forgotten the rest!

Hold tight….5-4-3-2-1…lift off!

We will be learning about:

  • different materials and their properties
  • the planets in the solar system
  • simple animation
  • Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin (the first men to land on the Moon)

You could support your child by:

  • visit the library and read space-themed books
  • search websites for some fascinating space facts and make a fact book
  • find out about different people who have visited space
  • make a telescope from junk modelling. Look up into the night sky. Can you see any wonderful patterns? Draw the pattern of stars that you spotted
  • make your own space song or rhyme.

As part of this topic, the children will be designing and making their own space crafts. Please save any recycling that you think would be useful and bring it into school next half term.
