Red Nose Day
Wat Tyler 2011
The children in year 4 all survived their 3-day residential visit to Wat Tyler Country Park last week. The residential was entitled 'Survival Challenge' and all of the children were up for the challenge and showed how brilliantly they can perform and survive together.
During the first day, the children had time to settle in to the residential centre and make their dormitories as homely as possible. They then took part in some team games and tried to protect an egg from a great fall.
After lunch they got their compasses out and began following the clues to explore the park before using nets to capture and identify some of the mini-beasts that live at the park. The first day then ended with a night walk and a visit to a very atmospheric Cooper's Cottage.
Day two saw the children begin their survival training with an obstacle relay and a trip down the mudslide before they tried their luck at pond dipping. This was followed by some time to relax their legs and have a go at some kite making before the day ended around the campfire where the children learnt a song that never ends (apologies parents if they are still singing!!).
The final day saw the children investigate some of the history of the park. The children learnt about the dynamite factory that used to be on the site and had a go at making their own dynamite before investigating an explosion that took place at the factory in the early part of the 1900s.
All that was then left to do was visit the gift shop before returning to school.
The children were superb throughout and a good time was had by all, including the (tired) staff!!!
